KHARTOUM CAMEL MARKET

The Largest Camel Trading Hub in the Arab World

KHARTOUM, SUDAN

Sudan is one of the largest exporters of camels in the world, having the second-highest number of camels on earth. Destined for both the high-end racing world of the Arabian Gulf as well as the meat markets of Cairo, these animals are bought and sold at the El Molih market on the outskirts of Khartoum twice weekly.

Here, they are sold and lifted into awaiting trucks to make their journey across the desert to Egypt or to the Red Sea in order to be shipped to Saudi Arabia.

Camel men work here day in and out to take care of the animals, store them in pens, and if sold, transfer them using forklifts and cranes onto waiting trucks. The heat is brutal— at 45 degrees in June— and yet they spend the entire day outside, largely without water, to tend to the camels. The workers set up small shade structures using palm branches to stay out of the constant sun.

The work is low-paid, arduous, and draining, but Khartoum’s camel market has continued much along these same lines for decades.
